At Omaha HAVEN we strive to assist families in transitioning between public and home-school settings and provide opportunities for Latter-Day Saint home-school families and their friends to connect in meaningful ways. Everyone is welcome to utilize this resource and participate in activities as we each seek to fulfill our divine charge--to build families that are respectful, educated, compassionate, faith-filled contributors to a civil society.

A Remarkable Journey

By Ame Burton

Why is the start of a new school year so exciting, so refreshing, so invigorating? Perhaps it's the new school supplies, rejuvenated enthusiasm, possibly new friends, new adventures, and new opportunities. Undoubtedly, it's having a “clean slate” to work upon. However, this could also be intimidating! Just remember that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Almost every year of our family homeschooling journey, we would come to the end and I'd wonder, “What did we accomplish?” Doubt and concern would begin to creep in. Inevitably, I'd begin to sift through our pictures from the year and come to realize we did a lot!! Those visual reminders brought back not only great memories, but a record of projects, explorations, discoveries, new friends, creative works, and plenty of laughs. Even now we get a big kick out of going through our photos from “school days” and remember all the good that took place one day at a time. You should see our “Seven Wonders of the World Hanging Garden” replica made out of a watermelon shell. Masterpiece!….if you have a very good imagination. :)

Seize the day! Take it one step at a time. Keep a record---written and photographed. Courageously step forward knowing you will be guided 'line upon line.' It's a remarkable journey indeed.

And don't forget to bring your camera to the HAVEN Fall Social being held at Cimarron Park on September 17th, from 6:00 - dusk. Bring a side or dessert to share and HAVEN will provide the main dish. Lawn chairs / blankets and drinks will come in handy, as well. Come prepared to play, connect, learn, and kick off a great new year!!
