At Omaha HAVEN we strive to assist families in transitioning between public and home-school settings and provide opportunities for Latter-Day Saint home-school families and their friends to connect in meaningful ways. Everyone is welcome to utilize this resource and participate in activities as we each seek to fulfill our divine charge--to build families that are respectful, educated, compassionate, faith-filled contributors to a civil society.

Curriculum

The strength and the challenge of home-school is the way it can be tailored to the individual needs of your child instead of being that one-size-fits-all education. It's an adventure finding the best fit for you and your family so we've provided some suggestions for curriculum to get you started. Keep scrolling for addition tips and board member picks.

Things to keep in mind:

The process of choosing curriculum can be related to the scientific method:
  1. Ask a question: What are our family goals for education? (Passing tests, instilling a love of learning, meeting unique needs, personal responsibility, etc.) What curriculum does the state require? What curriculum will best meet our individual and family goals? etc.
  2. Do background research: Read reviews, talk to home-schooling friends, check out home-school curriculum (friends, online, Christian bookstore, etc. )
  3. Construct Hypothesis: In this step you are saying, I think THIS curriculum will be a good fit.
  4. Experiment: Implement the curriculum or method with your children and family.
  5. Is this Working? Now that you’ve tried it out, ask another question: Is this curriculum/method helping you and your children meet your goals? If no, experiment with a different method. If yes, yay! Keep going!
  6. Follow your intuition. You know your child better than ANYONE in the world and you will recognize the best fit over time.

Katie Burton’s Choices:

My method: I believe in providing strong foundations; substance over busy work; increased freedom and responsibility in education as children grow. I believe in providing tools for children that they can use throughout their lives; basic math, reading, writing (with editing), note-taking, study skills, research skills, etc. Phonics for reading, Latin for vocabulary, Saxon for math - these building block type methods allow children to learn exponentially rather than one step at a time.
All-encompassing Curriculum:
*Classical Conversations (Great method – pricey)
*K-12 (except their math). Accredited. The Omaha Virtual School is through K12.
Math:  Saxon Math
Language Arts:
    *Reading
-Beginning Reading: Look for phonics-based rather than sight-word based.
-The Good and the Beautiful Literature (I used their book list only)
            -Thomas Jefferson Education booklist
    *Writing:(Above 3rd grade)
            -IEW Writing
-College Sentence Combining (I adjust these to meet needs)
    *IEW Grammar
    *Vocabulary: Vocabulary From Classical Roots
Science:  Apologia (I let the kids choose based on interest.)
History: The History of The World: Vol 1-4 & Activity Books 1-4 by Susan Wise Bauer
Health:
*Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens
*Growing-Up: Gospel Answers on Growth and Development
    *For the Strength of Youth
