At Omaha HAVEN we strive to assist families in transitioning between public and home-school settings and provide opportunities for Latter-Day Saint home-school families and their friends to connect in meaningful ways. Everyone is welcome to utilize this resource and participate in activities as we each seek to fulfill our divine charge--to build families that are respectful, educated, compassionate, faith-filled contributors to a civil society.

Seeking Help For Children? Disabilities/Mental Health Concerns/Etc.

By Ame Burton

In a world where a bajillion resources are available at our fingertips, it’s hard to know where to start or which ones are truly valuable in our quest for learning and wisdom. When we are seeking for help or resources to give us direction for one of life’s problems, emotions are heightened and it can be even more difficult to find what we are looking for. I’m confident you have experienced the value of good ‘word of mouth’ suggestions. I hope mine will prove just as valuable.

Recently while writing lessons, I had the opportunity to ponder in depth the many various challenges that face our families: anxiety and depression, pornography, defiant attitudes, etc. Fortunately, there are just as many, if not more, quality places to turn for solid information and help. I would submit that the key to being able to work through whatever challenges come our way, is to be prepared, proactive, educated ahead of time and to know what ‘symptoms’ to look for in loved ones. Then we can better have a plan of action and know where to turn for help, when the need arises.

The church website has done a remarkable job in providing simple, easy to access resources on a number of critical topics that we may encounter in life. I encourage you to take a tour and become familiar with the content, FHE lessons, help resources, and community resources suggested on their pages. I am only listing a couple in each category and only a couple topics. Dive in!

I hope you find these and other community resources most helpful. And it’s always great to have a friend to talk to as well...your personal support group. Thanks, HAVEN.
